SERVICE EXPERTISE

New Mexico has some of the best outdoor recreation anywhere in the United States. From trophy elk hunting to record trout fishing, New Mexico really is a sportsman's paradise. However, there are strict rules and regulations surrounding hunting and fishing in New Mexico. If you run afoul of the rules, the consequences can be severe. If convicted of certain hunting violations you can lose your rights to hunt or lose your outfitter license. Even worse, you can end up in state or federal prison. These cases are extremely unique and require a unique skillset. As a former prosecutor I have experience in both prosecuting and defending these cases and will fight for you to keep your hunting rights.

The most prominent and significant issue for landowners is the distribution of “land-owner elk tags.” These tags are assigned by the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish through the “E-Plus” system and are based upon how viable one’s property is to support a healthy elk population. Some of these tags are allowed only for use on one’s own property, while “unit-wide” tags allow for elk hunting throughout a designated hunting unit. These tags can be a significant source of income for the landowner, so it is vitally important to maximize the amount of tags your ranch or property receives. Our firm has extensive experience in the E-Plus application process as well as E-Plus appeals. It is vital to consult with an experienced legal counsel in order to enjoy the full recreation potential of your ranch, while still complying with all rules and regulations.
